The agentic economy cannot scale without cryptographic settlement infrastructure. In 2008 the Bitcoin whitepaper described a system for transferring value between parties who need not trust one another and who share no common institution. The technical design was minimal: a public ledger, proof of work, and the ability for any participant to verify the rules independently. When instead read as infrastructure for autonomous agents rather than as a consumer payment rail, its constraints become advantages. Agents do not require user interfaces, brand trust, or continuous human mediation; they require verifiable state, predictable execution, and the capacity to settle without a third party that must itself be trusted. The intervening years largely treated the same primitives as instruments of speculation and as channels for funds that existing institutions preferred not to intermediate. Those uses are real and they have shaped regulation and public perception. They do not exhaust the capability. Smart contracts, shared ledgers, and cryptographic identity of counterparties are poorly matched to everyday human commerce. They are well matched to the coordination problems that arise once software systems must discover one another, negotiate terms, and transfer value or rights at machine timescales and across organizational boundaries. The same properties that make the infrastructure awkward for people make it serviceable for a denser network of agents. Whether that network remains confined to digital domains or eventually supports activity at greater physical distances, the requirement is identical: a substrate that can enforce rules and record outcomes without relying on any single operator remaining honest or available. The design supplies the minimal components such a future would require.
