it's not an equal and opposite force - that's where they'll respond with "thrust"
it's a moving frame of reference, nothing to do with force
force would be a headwind that offsets the thrust
this is simply ground that moves

lmao, is the helicopter on?
The lift from a helicopter is produced by the blades, so yes it would take off.
If there was a wind blowing counterdirectional to the blades then no, it would never produce lift.
No belt movement can counteract the thrust.

But the plane still has to roll forward down the runway.
Impossible when it’s counteracted by an equal and opposite force.
mythbusters is distracting you from the reality that the question, as posed, can't be demonstrated in practice because of schrodiingers conveyor belt and the sawtooth wave of forward velocity
Whatever speed the wheels spin, the belt spins the same speed in the opposite direction
But that information doesn’t matter and only exists to distract you from the real reason the plane is taking off
I feel eggnored
the point is that the belt no longer matches the wheel speed
That’s okay, they can go even faster if they want to
if the plane takes off while the belt is moving at 1,000,000,000 mph, the wheels are moving at 1,000,000,180 mph
if the plane takes off while the belt is moving at 1,000,000,000 mph, the wheels are moving at 1,000,000,180 mph
This is hilarious and educational.
you're making an assumption here
I'll give you a hint, the word is one you're hear in a physics class
It literally does not matter how fast the wheels or belt move
The wheels could be spinning backwards at a billion mph while the track moves backwards a billion mph
The plane will still take off.
