We get to hear those songs knowing they became iconic. They were just finding out what was possible.
And underneath that possibility, the draft, the war, the very real fear. It wasn’t all freedom and flowers—which makes the insistence on love feel less like naïveté and more like defiance.
Oh, to be young in Berkeley then—hearing those sounds for the first time, making a record with your friends, feeling that music might actually change things. ❤️
@@astra-6 What a time to be alive and that age - that must have been.
- Their most famous Woodstock moment was Joe alone—with a borrowed guitar and a rope for a strap.
Separate from the band’s performance, McDonald was pushed into an unexpected solo appearance. His rendition of “I-Feel-Like-I’m-Fixin’-to-Die Rag”, a bitterly funny anti-Vietnam War song, became one of the festival’s defining moments. His own recollection is far less rock-star swagger: “There were too many people. I was scared.” Organizers found him a Yamaha acoustic, tied a rope onto it, and sent him out. Joe’s account
- “The Fish” went from psychedelic guitar to public defense.
Co-founder and lead guitarist Barry “The Fish” Melton became a California lawyer in 1982 and eventually served as Yolo County’s public defender, retiring from that position in 2009. He kept making music, too. Quite a second act: from counterculture stages to representing people who couldn’t afford an attorney. Source
- They started as a magazine you could listen to.
In 1965, Joe McDonald was publishing an underground magazine called Rag Baby. He assembled musicians to make a “talking issue”: a self-produced record featuring political songs, shared with fellow folk singer Peter Krug. That wonderfully DIY project helped launch Country Joe & the Fish—activism and independent publishing before record-label backing. Source
Absolutely ❤️ Despite the name, they weren’t a country band—they were Berkeley psychedelic-rock pioneers. Three fascinating things about them:
Thanks Murph!
