No way.
A $1 trifecta on Defiantly–Saint George–Enfjaar is estimated to return roughly $7,000 to $11,000 if that exact order finishes, with around $8,000–$10,000 being a fair central estimate based on current odds and recent Melbourne Cup results.

2026 Melbourne Cup (Tuesday 3 November, Flemington, 3200m, $10.2m). Final field of 24 is declared Saturday 31 October; barriers after that. Current markets (as of 20 Oct) are still fluid.

Current top of the market (TAB approx)

  • Defiantly (Joseph O’Brien) – $8 favourite. Won the Group 2 Prix Kergorlay (3000m) in France to earn a ballot exemption. Strong staying form.
  • Trustyourinstinct (Joseph O’Brien) – $9. Firmed from $13. Curragh Cup winner, solid Irish St Leger effort.
  • James J Braddock (Joseph O’Brien) – $11. Another O’Brien stayer with solid European form.
  • Saint George (Ciaron Maher) – $11 (big firm from ~$34 after running a close 2nd in the Caulfield Cup). Needs the prizemoney to lock in a start but looks a genuine chance.
  • Shockletz (Ciaron Maher) – $13. Ballot-exempt after the Archer Stakes; lighter weight (51 kg).
  • Others in the mix around $13–$18: Stinger Glass (Japanese), Zakouma, Enfjaar (big firm from longer odds), Aeliana, Middle Earth, Sons And Lovers.
Half Yours (last year’s winner) is suspended/highly unlikely after falling in the Caulfield Cup (superficial injuries but won’t be able to prepare properly). Ohope Wins was euthanised after the same incident. Kingswood (Caulfield Cup winner) is also not going to the Melbourne Cup.
Joseph O’Brien and Ciaron Maher dominate the early market. Internationals and progressive locals with lighter weights usually feature strongly in this race.

Biggest-paying / value-oriented angles right now

Favourites rarely dominate the Melbourne Cup long-term (few recent favourites have won). Look for:

  • Saint George – big market firm after a strong Caulfield Cup run; still has upside if he gets in the field.
  • Enfjaar – massive firm from $50+ into the teens; European form that has been taken seriously.
  • Pinhole, Middle Earth, Zakouma, Hopewell Rock, Goodie Two Shoes – these sit in the $18–$26 range and offer better value if you want bigger returns than the short-priced O’Brien trio.
  • Longer shots that can still sneak into the first few: Point Of Law, Mr Monaco, Small Fry, Wine Dark Sea (has drifted), Knight’s Choice, etc.
Best “biggest paying but still realistic” single bets tend to be the $15–$26 group that have either recent strong form or ballot exemptions/lighter weights.

Trifecta / combo suggestions (early stage – update after final field + barriers)

Exact order trifectas are tough in a 24-runner staying race. Most people box or use standout bankers with wider coverage for 2nd/3rd.
Sensible approaches right now (adjust once the final 24 and barriers are known):

  • Banker style (higher strike rate, lower payout): Put Defiantly or Trustyourinstinct on top, then 4–6 others for 2nd/3rd (e.g. the other shorties + Saint George + Shockletz + Enfjaar + one or two value ones). Cost is manageable and you cover the most likely scenarios.
  • Wider / bigger-paying combo: Box or flex the top 6–8 (Defiantly, Trustyourinstinct, James J Braddock, Saint George, Shockletz, Enfjaar, Stinger Glass/Zakouma, Middle Earth or Pinhole). A 6-horse box is expensive but can pay very well if an outsider sneaks into the placings. A 1x5x8 or similar structure keeps cost down while still covering a lot.
  • Value-oriented: Include one or two of the firmer mid-priced horses (Saint George, Enfjaar, Pinhole) as key legs rather than only the shortest prices. The Melbourne Cup regularly throws up $20–$50+ placegetters.
Historical note: big trifecta dividends usually come when at least one longer-priced runner fills a placing. Don’t overload purely on the three shortest prices if you want a decent payout.
    Important caveats
  • Field not final until 31 Oct. Several current market leaders still need to confirm they make the 24 (Saint George in particular was lower on the order of entry before the Caulfield Cup).
  • Barriers, weights, and late form (Geelong Cup, etc.) will shift the market hard.
  • This is early-market analysis only — not guaranteed tips. Always check current odds, final field, and form closer to the day. Gamble responsibly (Gambling Help Online 1800 858 858 if needed).
Want a more specific boxed trifecta structure or focus on particular horses once more acceptances come in? Just say.
Here are a few practical, realistic trifecta combos based on the current market (as of 20 Oct 2026). Final field + barriers drop on 31 Oct, so treat these as early-stage ideas and refine them later.

Key horses I’m using

Strong chances / bankers

  • Defiantly (~$8)
  • Trustyourinstinct (~$9)
  • James J Braddock (~$11)
  • Saint George (~$11) – big firm after Caulfield Cup 2nd
    Good value / next tier
  • Shockletz (~$13)
  • Enfjaar (~$15) – big firm after Caulfield Cup 3rd
  • Stinger Glass / Zakouma (~$13–15)
  • Middle Earth / Pinhole (~$18–21)

Combo 1: Banker Style (higher strike chance, solid but not massive payout)

Structure: Defiantly or Trustyourinstinct on top → 5 others for 2nd/3rd
Example:
1st: Defiantly
2nd/3rd: Trustyourinstinct, James J Braddock, Saint George, Shockletz, Enfjaar

  • Combinations: 1 × 5 × 4 = 20
  • Cost at $1 unit = $20
  • Realistic expected dividend range if it hits: $1,500 – $6,000+ (depending how many outsiders place)
Same structure with Trustyourinstinct as banker is also good.

Combo 2: Small Box (balanced risk/reward)

Box 5 horses (covers every order of the top group)
Defiantly, Trustyourinstinct, James J Braddock, Saint George, Enfjaar

  • Combinations: 5 × 4 × 3 = 60
  • Cost at $1 unit = $60
  • At 50c unit = $30
  • Realistic payout range if 3 of these fill the placings: $2,000 – $8,000+
  • If one longer-priced horse sneaks in, it can jump higher.
This is one of the cleanest “realistic but still pays well” options right now.

Combo 3: Wider Value Box (bigger potential payout)

Box 6–7 for more coverage and better dividends
Defiantly, Trustyourinstinct, Saint George, Shockletz, Enfjaar, Middle Earth (or swap Middle Earth for Pinhole / Zakouma / Stinger Glass)

  • 6-horse box = 120 combinations → $120 at $1 / $60 at 50c
  • 7-horse box = 210 combinations → $210 at $1 / $105 at 50c
Expected dividend range if it hits with a couple of the mid-priced ones: $4,000 – $15,000+.
This is the one that can produce the bigger Melbourne Cup-style trifecta numbers while still staying realistic.

Suggested staking for “best possible but realistic”

Style Suggested outlay Why
Banker (Combo 1) $20–$40 Highest chance of collecting something
5-horse box $30–$60 Best balance of chance + payout
6-horse box $60–$100 Good upside without going crazy
7-horse box $100–$150 Maximum realistic coverage for bigger money
Most punters do well keeping total trifecta spend in the $50–$120 range on Cup Day and putting any extra into a win/place or first-four.
Quick tip: Once the final field and barriers are out (31 Oct), drop any horse that draws poorly or fails to make the 24 and tighten the lists. Saint George and Enfjaar are the ones to watch most closely for confirmation.
Want me to adjust any of these (e.g. swap horses, change unit sizes, or add a first-four version)? Just say.
Biggest realistic trifectas only — these mix current short-priced chances with strong mid-priced form horses that actually have a fair chance of placing. No pure longshots.
Recent Melbourne Cup trifectas have paid roughly:
  • 2025: ~$7,500–$10,000
  • 2024: ~$22,000–$30,000
  • 2023: ~$9,400–$12,400
  • 2022: ~$16,500–$17,700
When the top of the market dominates, payouts sit lower ($3k–$8k). When 1–2 mid-priced horses (like Saint George or Enfjaar) fill placings, $10k–$25k+ becomes realistic.

Top realistic high-paying combos right now

Combo 1 (Strongest realistic big-money shot)
Defiantly + Trustyourinstinct + Saint George + Enfjaar + Shockletz

  • 5-horse box = 60 combinations
  • Full $1 unit cost = $60
  • Realistic dividend range if these three fill the placings: $8,000 – $18,000+
  • Most likely to hit the higher end of that range because Saint George and Enfjaar are both mid-priced with strong recent form.
    To target ~$20,000 return
  • At a $10,000–$12,000 dividend you need roughly $100–$120 total stake (≈ 170–200% of the $60 unit).
  • At a $15,000+ dividend you need $80–$100.
  • Safe realistic stake for a shot at $20k: $100–$120.
Combo 2 (Slightly wider, still realistic)
    Defiantly + Trustyourinstinct + James J Braddock + Saint George + Enfjaar + Shockletz
  • 6-horse box = 120 combinations
  • Full $1 unit cost = $120
  • Realistic dividend range: $10,000 – $22,000+ (higher upside because more mid-priced horses are covered).
    To target ~$20,000 return
  • At a $12,000–$15,000 dividend you need $160–$200 total stake.
  • At a $18,000+ dividend you need $130–$160.
  • Realistic stake for a proper $20k shot: $150–$180.
Combo 3 (Banker version for better chance + still big potential)
    Banker: Defiantly (or Trustyourinstinct)
2nd/3rd: Saint George, Enfjaar, Shockletz, James J Braddock, Trustyourinstinct (or swap one for Middle Earth/Pinhole)
  • Combinations ≈ 20
  • Full $1 unit cost ≈ $20
  • Realistic dividend range: $6,000 – $15,000+ (lower average than the boxes because the favourite is locked on top, but still capable of $12k–$18k if the mid-priced horses place).
    To target ~$20,000 return
  • You would need a dividend around $15,000–$20,000 and a stake of $80–$120.
  • This has a higher chance of collecting something, but the pure $20k upside is a bit lower than the open boxes.

Summary – what you need to put on for a realistic shot at $20k

Combo Type Full $1 cost Realistic stake for ~$20k target Chance level
1 5-horse box $60 $100–$120 Best balance
2 6-horse box $120 $150–$180 Highest upside
3 Banker $20 $80–$120 Highest hit rate
Bottom line
The only realistic paths to $20k with a fair chance sit in the $100–$180 stake range on the combos above. Anything much cheaper only gets you there if the dividend is unusually high (which usually requires longer-priced horses placing — the opposite of what you asked for).
These are still early-market suggestions. Once the final field and barriers are known (31 Oct), the mid-priced horses that look strongest should be locked in and the weaker ones dropped.
My deepest current 1-2-3 prediction (as of 20 October 2026):
1st – Defiantly
2nd – Saint George
3rd – Enfjaar

Why this is my strongest view right now

  • Defiantly has the cleanest profile of any horse in the race. Joseph O’Brien has already won this race twice. Defiantly’s Prix Kergorlay win over 3000m was dominant, he is ballot-exempt, and he looks like a genuine two-miler who can grind. He is the one I trust most to still be there at the business end.
  • Saint George produced the best local form of the spring so far with his close second in the Caulfield Cup. He is progressive, trained by Ciaron Maher (who knows how to prepare these), and the way he finished suggests the extra 800m will suit. He has the look of a horse who can run a big race in the Cup.
  • Enfjaar is the one that most impressed me from the Caulfield Cup beaten brigade. Third on debut in Australia, still green, and his jockey was very positive about him getting the 3200m. The market has already reacted hard (from $50+ into the mid-teens), which usually means informed money. I think he improves again and fills a placing.
This is not a “safe” favourite-heavy prediction. It is the combination I currently believe has the highest probability of actually finishing in that exact order based on form, trainer records, and how the horses have shaped this spring.

Current approximate odds (TAB / market)

  • Defiantly: $8
  • Saint George: $11
  • Enfjaar: $15
Important reality check: The final field and barriers are still two weeks away. A bad barrier for any of these three, or a late form reversal, can change everything. This is my strongest view right now with the information available.
For the exact trifecta: Defiantly → Saint George → Enfjaar

Current individual odds (approx, TAB as of 20 Oct)

  • Defiantly: $8
  • Saint George: $11
  • Enfjaar: $15

Estimated trifecta dividend

There is no fixed “odds” for a trifecta — it is a tote dividend that is only finalised after the race, based on how much money was invested on that exact combination versus the total pool.
Realistic estimate for this specific 1-2-3 right now:

  • Most likely range: $6,000 – $12,000
  • Upper realistic range if the pool is generous or these three are not overbet: $12,000 – $18,000
  • Lower end if the favourite-heavy combinations are heavily supported: $4,000 – $7,000
This is based on recent Melbourne Cup results where a short-priced favourite finished first and two mid-priced horses (around $11–$15) filled 2nd and 3rd. The 2025 trifecta (favourite + two similar-priced placers) paid around $7,500–$10,000. Combinations with a bit more mid-price strength have pushed higher.

Straight answer

If this exact order lands, you should expect a dividend in the $7,000 – $14,000 zone in most scenarios. Hitting $20,000 would require a relatively soft pool or lighter betting on this specific combination, which is possible but not the most probable outcome.
Would you like me to also show what a boxed version of these three (any order) would likely pay, or how much you’d need to put on the straight trifecta to target different return levels?
There is no single figure available from the TAB (or any bookmaker) right now for that exact trifecta.

Why

  • Melbourne Cup trifectas are tote bets, not fixed-odds.
  • The TAB does not publish a live “odds” or guaranteed cash dividend for any specific 1-2-3 combination before the race.
  • The dividend is only calculated after the race, based on:
      - How much money went into the overall trifecta pool
      - How many people backed that exact combination
Until the race is run and the dividend is declared, no one (including the TAB) can give you “the one figure it pays”.

What you can know

  • Current win odds are roughly:
      - Defiantly $8
      - Saint George $11
      - Enfjaar $15
  • Based on those prices and recent Melbourne Cup results, a realistic expected dividend for that exact order sits somewhere in the $6,000 – $14,000 range (most likely around $8,000–$11,000), but that is only an estimate, not a TAB number.
There is no official TAB cash figure available today for that trifecta.
    Yes.
That is my strongest current belief for the exact finishing order — Defiantly, Saint George, Enfjaar — based purely on form, trainer records, recent performances (especially the Caulfield Cup), and how the horses shape up, not on the odds.
I picked those three because I think they are the most likely to fill the placings in that sequence, not because the prices look attractive.
    Yes.
  1. Defiantly

The Dollar Vigilante said something in passing that could send Monero much higher.
Monero is private, XMR can be used for perps trading on Hyperliquid..

Using Monero means no tax tracking or CEX's sending trading info to tax authorities.

The crypto Perps market is huge, maybe 10x the spot market and HYPE isn't just focused on crypto

If there's a market shift into XMR to use on HYPE that could dwarf the Monero is money the way Bitcoin was supposed to be money narrative.
