Each stage is testable on its own, and you don't need to understand BSV for stages 1 to 5.

  1. Learn Forth with JonesForth or gForth until you can write words and loops.
  2. Put Forth on a cheap microcontroller and blink an LED, then switch a relay.
  3. Control one PC's power through its power-button header, with Forth text commands over serial.
  4. Power several machines in sequence, plus a network switch and a firewall box.
  5. Move the control logic to a GA144 board once the design is proven.
  6. Linux machines auto-boot into the kiosk with Metanet Desktop and Treechat.
  7. Add the AI and expansion once the base is stable.

Plan 9 (and its active fork 9front) is a small research OS from Bell Labs where everything is a file and machines are designed to work as a network. That fits your "network of desktops" idea. The catch is that modern web apps like Treechat and Metanet Desktop almost certainly won't run on it, so I'd treat it as an experiment or terminal, not the base for those apps.

Where to ask the Forth community: comp.lang.forth, r/Forth, forth-standard.org, and the Forth2020 community. A good question is: "I want a Forth-only boot controller that powers and supervises other computers over serial and GPIO. What do you recommend?"

  • Open Firmware (IEEE 1275). This is a Forth-based boot firmware used on Sun SPARC machines, old PowerPC Macs, and the OLPC laptop. It is real "Forth before any OS" and the closest historical match to your idea. Reading how it works would help a lot.
  • J1 and similar Forth CPUs on FPGAs. These are Forth hardware you can build yourself, and a possible alternative to the GA144.
  • Mecrisp, zeptoForth, AmForth. These are bare-metal Forth for microcontrollers, ideal for your first gatekeeper.
  • gForth, pForth. These run on top of another OS but are good for learning.
  • JonesForth, SectorForth, DuskOS, colorForth, as listed before.

I don't know "Cosy", so a link would help. These exist, though please verify details yourself:

Never experiment with mains voltage directly. Use low-voltage signals into ready-made relay modules or the ATX power-on pin.
