Rename BSV to BCP — the Bitcoin Protocol"
The claim. Some users on X argue BSV should drop its ticker and call itself BCP, the Bitcoin Protocol. The idea is to shed the baggage of "SV" and claim what BSV says it is. The BSV Association's own materials already describe the chain as powered by the original Bitcoin protocol, outlined in the famous whitepaper, so why not put that in the name?
The counterpoint. A name that claims the whole category reads as a land grab, and that convinces nobody who isn't already convinced.
"Protocol" describes something; it isn't a name. Nobody calls their website "HTTP." If you call yourself the Bitcoin Protocol, every outsider hears one thing: we're the real Bitcoin. That's the most fought-over claim in crypto, and most of the market thinks BSV already lost it. A rename reopens that fight on the worst possible ground.
Stability is the pitch, and a rename contradicts it. BSV sells itself as a protocol that's "set in stone." In 2023 the Bitcoin SV brands were already unified under the BSV Blockchain umbrella, and this year the Chronicle upgrade was pitched as completing the protocol as originally intended and locking in stability. A third identity in eight years tells enterprises the opposite of "stable."
BCP is already taken. It's the acronym for business continuity plans, at least two major banks, and a well-known internet routing standard. A new name has to be searchable. BSV, whatever its reputation, at least returns BSV.
Tickers live with exchanges, not communities. A rename needs every listing venue to cooperate. Where BSV is listed, that's paperwork and risk for little gain. Where it's been delisted, a new name changes nothing.
Reputation follows usage. If BSV has an image problem, a cleaner label won't fix it. Applications people actually use, like Treechat itself, will. Rebrands are what projects do when they can't point to traction.
The honest concession. The pro-rename side has a real point: "SV" ties the chain to personalities and disputes many builders would rather leave behind. The question is whether a name change gets rid of that history or just looks like running from it.
