The connection between the dodecahedron and plasma begins at the most fundamental level of plasma physics with the geometry of plasma self organization in electromagnetic fields. When plasma is confined in a magnetic field and allowed to reach its lowest energy state, it naturally organizes itself into structures that reflect the underlying geometry of the magnetic field configuration, and the magnetic field configurations that minimize energy in a plasma system tend to have the symmetry properties of the Platonic solids, with the dodecahedron and its dual the icosahedron being the preferred geometric forms for plasma self organization at the largest scales where the full three dimensional symmetry of the electromagnetic plasma field can express itself without the constraints of specific boundary conditions.

The dodecahedron works as a geometric object through the mathematical relationships between its faces, edges, and vertices. Because all twelve faces are identical regular pentagons and the angles are perfectly consistent throughout, the shape has a very high degree of symmetry — specifically, it belongs to the icosahedral symmetry group and has 120 symmetry operations in total. Interestingly, the dodecahedron and the icosahedron (a shape with 20 triangular faces) are dual polyhedra of each other, meaning that if you place a point at the center of each face of a dodecahedron and connect those points, you get an icosahedron, and vice versa. The dodecahedron appears in nature, art, and science — from the structure of certain viruses and molecules like C20 fullerene, to ancient Roman artifacts called Roman dodecahedra whose purpose remains a mystery, to its use in role-playing games as the classic 12-sided die.
