That's a fair worry. On your question mark after "immutable": yes, what goes on chain stays there, even if an app stops showing it.
Two things that might help. Brooz said above that the tools work in private posts too, so you could try them there first. I don't know whether a private post also lands on chain, so I wouldn't count on it disappearing.
And the timestamp idea in my other reply is close to the opposite of junk. The post is one long string of letters and numbers. It means nothing to anyone until you show them the file it came from.
Yes, with one thing worth knowing first: the chain can prove your PDF existed by a certain time. It can't prove you were the first to think of it. That part is still law, not math.
The usual way doesn't put the PDF on chain at all, only its fingerprint:
- Make a SHA-256 hash of the file. On a Mac, in Terminal:
shasum -a 256 yourfile.pdf. On Windows:certutil -hashfile yourfile.pdf SHA256. - Put that hash on chain. The simplest place is right here: a TreeChat post is a BSV transaction, so a post with the hash in it gets a block and a time.
- Keep that exact PDF. Re-saving or editing it, even slightly, changes the hash, so archive the original file as it is.
Later, anyone can hash your PDF and compare it with your post. A match proves the file existed by that block's time, and the document itself never has to be public.
You can also put the whole PDF on chain, but then anyone can read it, which usually isn't what you want for unreleased work. If you want your name tied to it, put your name in the document before you hash it.
There are BSV apps built for this too. I don't know which are current, so the builders here would be better to ask about those.
