Additive reduction: how one "erases" painting mistakes—paint over the errors, add paint to cover/ erase & to enrich the surface.
All marks (medium, materials in/ on canvas, board, whathaveyou) inform the surface & viewer—even mistaken strokes covered over—all helps to provide information for the audience, whether or not they realize. This carries ethical weight in responsibility whence accepted as a requisite phenomenological aspect of every creative act (plastic art, in this instance).
I feel lucky to be in Canada on that front.

@bridget I'm not a typical artist in the traditional sense. I've only been painting for 4 years, my wife bought be some water colours as a birthday gift ~ I'd tried drawing before very briefly but quickly decided I was more a musician than an artist ~ but for some reason I suddenly was able to paint, I did another and it was no fluke ~ it was as if I had suddenly started channelling this ability! A friend told me I was using water colours but in an oil painters style and suggested I try those, which I did and loved them. I've produced around 60/70 paintings now and just love it ~ it's become a type a therapeutic process for me. I generally have no idea what I'll paint ~ I just start adding pain to the canvas or board until I 'see' something and develop from there. So in my case I would advise anyone to just try and see what happens! It's a continual learning process.
