暑假除了去外婆家，就想着去县城见父亲。母亲会给我车费，我非常高兴，哪怕天气非常炎热，在马路上拦着顶着个大气包的班车，炎热的中午，乘客只有我一个小孩，满心充满着即将见到父亲的期待和喜悦，司机有时还不收我的车费，我会非常高兴，我即将见到我的父亲，父亲在一个县城，那是多么向往的一个世界，那是县城。在那县城，我总会去同一个地方吃一种麻饼，非常好吃。还有父亲工作的地方是在一个学校里，我总羡慕那些读高中的学生，男男女女，好年轻又有城市感，他们漂亮的穿着，快乐地读着县城的学校，好生羡慕，想着有一天自己也和他们一样。
因为这个原因，后来我上高中的时候选择了父亲当年工作的学校。父亲曾在这学校的操场边工作，那时是预制板场，现在成了篮球场。一般父亲在工作的时候，我会到学校里到处玩耍，找寻各种昂贵香烟的烟盒，带回家的话在玩伴间可以炫耀。还记得那些烟盒中有“玉溪”的名字。后来在学校里对找寻烟盒也不感兴趣了，想来它也只是一个烟盒，虽然这些香烟的品种比较昂贵，但带回家和玩伴玩“扇烟盒”游戏的时候，它也只是一个烟盒，无甚昂贵不昂贵的。于是就总喜欢去看鸽子，那时在这个学校里有个养鸽子的老头，养了一大群，据说那鸽子会卖得比较贵，我在村庄是很少看到鸽子的，他们会咯咯咯地叫，长得也可爱。常常是一个人在学校里无聊地到处转，转着转着天光就暗了，就等着父亲做的饭菜。
父亲做的饭菜总是那么好吃，因为他的儿子去了，他会去买来猪肉，还有菱角菜，有时是竹笋，炒出来的菜特别香，和着那香喷喷蒸熟的米饭，好香，好好吃，那时我们太难得吃到一顿肉了。
那个学校在夏天的傍晚特别乡野，有一条很小的河流，里面还有鱼。总会有种傍晚的味道在我的气息记忆里。后来在我上高三的时候，我对自己的前途一片茫然，有种听天由命的感觉，我总会在这河流边一个人在晚上仰望天空和星星。我想是父亲当年在这里的劳动护佑了我考上了大学，给了我生命中重要的力量。
