The Y2K bug was averted thanks to a massive global prevention and remediation effort carried out over several years by millions of IT professionals.
Reasons for the success:
• Proactive planning: Starting in the 1990s, companies and governments invested hundreds of billions of dollars to analyze and fix lines of code.
• Remediation and updates: Teams replaced two-digit year codes with four-digit ones or implemented workarounds (such as windowing).
• Rigorous testing: Critical systems (banking, healthcare, transportation) were tested and secured before the turn of the year.
The fact that little to nothing happened is precisely because the problem was resolved beforehand, making the corrective work invisible to the general public.
