Idea for voice project.

A west African “talking stick” is a symbol of authority that confers the right to speak in public and address a group. Wikipedia link if you are interested.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talking_stick

We need a talking stick that is conferred by POW. Similar to a twitter space but the person with the right to speak is decided by how much POW they are conferred by the listeners. One could boost themselves to speak or they could boost someone else that they want to hear.

This way we could communicate in costly signals by voice.

I think the infrastructure to build this already exists on dimely.io

(I’m posting this on pow.co because I think the character limit isn’t letting me post this as an answer to "What should we do next?" on askbitcoin.io)

In Islamic thinking there are 3 things one can do in a lifetime that continue to benefit a human being after his certain death - here they are by order of importance:

  1. Leaving knowledge that continues to benefit others.
  2. Leaving a perpetual charity that alleviates human suffering.
  3. Raising a child well.

I like to think that POW.co could helps us contribute to the first one. Be mindful of what you boost, it has spiritual implications - and I say this even as a non-believer.

The Economics of Addiction

Daniel Krawisz

Attracting users to a Boosted platform is all about selling a healthy lifestyle to addicts. That is, of course, not easy and some understanding of addiction is required to optimize the effort.

Economically, addiction can be understood in terms of time-preference. Time preference means that people care more about something that is immanent, whether good or bad, than the same thing if it is far in the future. Addiction can be understood as something that is near-term pleasurable but long-term painful. Someone with a high time preference will care more about short-term pleasure than long-term pain and so will always see the addictive substance as a good choice even after he has been gravely hurt by it. Someone with a low time preference would not get addicted easily because he would prefer not to hurt himself down the line.

Overcoming addiction involves accepting a short-term pain in exchange for a long-term pleasure. In order for an addict to choose this, he would have to develop a lower time-preference or else his short-term pain would have to increase significantly in order to make overcoming addiction worthwhile for him.

It is not very likely that addicts will reduce their time preference. More likely would be that they would lower their time preference by overcoming addiction. Thus, the deal that is being offered to them must become much worse in the short-term in order to make the long-term pleasure of freedom from addiction sufficiently desirable for them. It is well-known that addicts must hit "rock bottom" in order to want to improve. That is what I am talking about.

A typical sales technique is to identify a pain point and offer a mitigation of that pain in exchange for a less painful amount of money. Clearly, such a technique has no prospect of selling an addict on a healthy lifestyle because a salesman cannot change a potential customer's time preference and cannot increase the potential customer's short-term pain very much without losing the prospect of a sale.

Thus, the best we can do with selling people on Boost POW is to seek people who are ready to overcome addiction. No amount of hyping Boost will make it attractive to addicts just as no amount of pleading would typically be enough to convince an alcoholic to stop drinking. Someone who really wanted to help an addict quit cannot do so with kindness, but only by withholding kindness. That is genuinely painful to the addict and it is also justice because addicts do not make good friends.

Unfortunately, people often get stuck in relationships with addicts and cannot bring themselves to withhold kindness. These people are enablers, which is a kind of addiction in and of itself. Enablers are like a salesman who won't end his sales pitch even though he knows the potential client will never really buy.

In terms of promoting Boost, there is nothing we can do with Boost alone other than searching for those few who are ready to overcome addiction and wasting no time on those who are not. Actually convincing addicts to quit requires something that they need from us that we can with hold. We can do this with Boost because with hashpower we can show that we are capable of love. Our love must be apportioned justly because we do not have an infinite amount.

Two excellent books I can recommend on addiction are Drunks, Drugs, and Debits and How to Spot Hidden Alcoholics, both by Doug Thorburn. These books are about drug addiction, which is an especially serious form of addiction. It would be a good idea to look into the physiological roots of addiction, which has to do with dopamine.

Thorburn recommends keeping alcoholics and other drug addicts out of your life entirely, which I agree with. I don't think a social media addict is likely to be as destructive as an alcoholic, so I don't think it would be just to withhold love to the same degree. However, we should think carefully about what we are losing by focusing on them instead of on each other. Love compounds on itself, so you get more when you give more to others who can give more. Enabling addicts is losing energy that could be spent on more hashpower.

Improvements to Powco.dev

Daniel Krawisz

The concept of powco.dev is an ideal way of using Boost. Right now a problem has been noted with current users of Boost not using powco.dev. It is critical to make this site enjoyable for us to use because of the potential productivity boosts that it gives us. We must identify the weak points in the user experience in powco.dev as it is currently.

The big issue as I see it with powco.dev is that the user experience is disconnected. Accomplishing very simple things with powco.dev is very complicated and someone who does not know how powco.dev is supposed to work can't use it at all.

Issues and other posts are made on github, which is not linked to powco.dev in any direct way. Once an issue is created on github, there is no direct link to the same issue on powco.dev. There is also no feedback to know when an issue will appear on powco.dev. Currently, someone who wants to boost a new issue has to search for it on powco.dev. It might not be there because it doesn't appear right away. Sometimes it seems like it just doesn't work at all. Example: I can't find some of these issues on powco.dev.

What is needed is a github bot that links to the issue on powco.dev, provides the bounty address, and notifies users of other updates, such as funds going into the bounty address and bounties being collected by some github user.

Ideally, the bot would be able to provide a boost button that appears on github. It would be better to enable users to interact with powco.dev directly from github as much as possible because github already has a nice UI that we wouldn't want to compete with.

In addition, powco.dev posts as they appear on pow.co do not look very good and, most importantly, do not report the bounty for an issue. Furthermore, these posts link back to github instead of powco.dev. That means that the only way for a user to figure out the bounty on an issue, starting from pow.co, is to go to github, copy the name of the issue, and then search for it on powco.dev.

Thoughts on Boost Chess

Daniel Krawisz

Here I respond to a proposal of a boosted chess game posted here. The author proposes that a move is made for a player when some difficulty threshold is achieved for all proposed moves for that player. It is a good idea to think about how some activation would be achieved with Boost in a game. In other words, what process would be used to take a discrete action? I do not have a solution to this problem but I do have a criticism of the author's proposal: a potential problem is that some arbitrary difficulty threshhold would never be reached under some circumstances. For example, suppose that the next move is obvious and everyone agrees on it easily. There would really be no reason to boost it all that high because there would be no controversy associated with it. Thus, the activation threshhold may never be reached for that move.

In general, I think that chess is not a great model for a boosted game. A better model for a boost-based game would be a cooperative game like Arkham Horror. In this game, the players all win or lose together and are playing against an algorithm with random input. For winning games, there could also be degrees of success, like 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize for the players who achieved the most.

The big problem with chess as a boosted game is that at every turn, just one move must be selected out of all possible moves. This does not work well with boost because the top boosted item in a list is not necessarily the true best answer. Handicaps are expected to be correlated with fitness, but not a perfect predictor of fitness. Hence, Boost works better with games in which all players have their own autonomy and boosted content has to do with overall strategy. Players should not be bound to follow the most boosted plan. The possibility of two or more competing strategies within one group is better and more likely to ensure that the best strategy wins out eventually. Perhaps a variant of chess could be designed in which each player controls one chess piece and all move simultaneously.

The next big problem with chess is that it would be almost impossible to prevent players on different teams from communicating with one another. The author of the previous post gets around this problem by saying that users could play both sides at once. Thus, the point of the game is no longer to win. Maybe the point is just to get better at boost! However, I think that there is still a problem, which is that the only hidden information in chess is the players' strategies. If this information is not hidden and chess becomes a perfectly cooperative game, then it never actually gets played and becomes a pure thought excercise. Users will ultimately not end up playing chess, but will instead solve the game of chess like game theoreticians (which is not a bad idea).

Asynchronous Chess: A Microcosm of Boost
Shirish Sarkar

As has been understood by the Bitcoin Hivemind, boosting costly signals leads dwellers of Plato's Cave into the light by using proof of work as a filter for good information. Resultantly, pow.co is the HUD for the game of reality.

We have come to understand that boosting is already a kind of game and that using elements of game design to make the experience as responsive as possible would be a worthwhile endeavor. I consider that something worth investing energy into figuring out. This however is not that idea.

Instead I propose a thought experiment for a hypothetical game of asynchronous chess as an educational tool for learning why boosting is valuable.

We imagine a standard game of chess where as usual white moves first. Some arbitrary difficulty threshold is established whereby players would boost all legal moves for white until the threshold is met. After this condition is fulfilled, the highest ranking move would execute, and the turn would switch to the black. Then the process repeats. Thus, we create a hivemind conscious that attempts to determine the best possible move for each side.

By giving players the ability to put a costly signal behind their move, we can imagine that the best possible move will be the one that passes the threshold. Chess is a reactive game, and playing it asynchronously allows for players of all skilltypes to spend as much time as possible considering all potential permutations of the next move. Then they would be forced to commit to this move using a costly signal. This also means players could be interested in playing both sides, as this performs like a general adversarial network, where two sides clash to produce the best output. So the outcome of the game is less important than the route taken to achieve it, since we can imagine the games themselves to move towards perfection.

Further thoughts - practically, a percentage of each move could be set aside to be split among the winning side using the winning moves. This would incentivize players to try their best, as well as play both sides of the game.

Proposal: use daily.meeting tag to limit contant of daily meeting.

The daily meeting is turning into the very problem that Boost was invented to solve. There are multiple guilty parties. We can make better meetings by more effectively using boost. Ideas on how have been discussed.

These would take some time to build properly. I have a proposal that can be implemented now.

  • We don't need to go over the top boosted content because we can assume that everybody has already done that.
  • We can use a tag such as "daily.meeting" for updates.

People attending the meeting can provide

  • introductions if they are new
  • comment on some top boosted content
  • provide an update if it is in the top 20 of the "daily.meeting" tag for the last 24 hours.

Next Powco Dev Shows - Luke Rohenaz & Kevin Johnson

This coming week we are planning two additional guests coming on the Powco Show to show off their open source github repositories.

These shows shall be conducted at the normal meeting room given they receive enough boost attention beforehand.

Luke Rohenaz will be showing off connecting identity to posts and all of the things we are doing with the open social protocol. He is showing a product that uses Bitcoin Author Protocol (BAP Identity) and how they can be integrated natively into relayx, stag wallets.

Any information related to BAP Identities or anyone's experience will be helpful before we have the meeting.

Kevin Johnson will be showing his powerful bsv-spv libraries for tapping directly into the global peer to peer stream of transactions. His libraries power myriad applications on top of Bitcoin including Ark To Bitcoin and Canonic book publishing platform.

Anyone with node.js experience looking to gain new super powers should be prepared to follow along live in their terminal.

Please also brainstorm ideas for combining Boostpow with BSBN bitcoin book publishing standard, since Kevin is the expert creator of that standard.

Further Ideas

We haven't decided how to distribute the Powco Dev Show, he is hoping the "New platform we have: Powco Meet would be integrated into that somehow".

1ielvis proposes a token-gated room for your videos to be accessed. That would increase the value of the tokens and make them worth having if you want this information.
