Extrinsic vs. Intrinsic Motivation

Daniel Krawisz

Extrinsic motivation means doing something for an external reward and intrinsic means doing something for its own reward.

A key lesson in the study of extrinsic versus intrinsic rewards is that the use of extrinsic rewards reduces any intrinsic motivation.

This video discusses a study in which children who enjoyed art were given rewards when they did art. When the rewards were taken away, the children were less interested in doing art than before the study started.

The book Unconditional Parenting by Alfie Kohn discusses a similar study which found that children who were praised for being generous ended up being less generous.

Every time they heard “Good sharing!” or “I’m so proud of you for helping,” they became a little less interested in sharing or helping. Those actions came
to be seen not as something valuable in their own right but as some-
thing the children had to do to get that reaction again from an adult.
In this case, it was generosity that became merely a means to an end.
In other cases, it might be painting or swimming or multiplying or any-
thing else for which we offer positive reinforcement.

Thus, the use of rewards is destructive on growth. The book goes on to say

Researchers keep finding that individuals who are
praised for doing well at a creative task often stumble at the next task.
Why? Partly because the praise creates pressure to “keep up the good
work” that gets in the way of doing so. Partly because people’s inter-
est in what they’re doing may have declined (because now the main
goal is just to get more praise).12 Partly because they become less likely
to take risks—a prerequisite for creativity—once they start thinking
about how to keep those positive comments coming.

In order to grow the Bitcoin economy, we need entrepreneurs, as many as we can get. Entrepreneurs have to rely on intrinsic motivation because profits are uncertain and only come after a long and hard work. The work must be motivating in and of itself in order to reach the point of earning profits for it.

Twetch and other platforms that train people to expect tips every time they say something snarky are training people to be bad entrepreneurs who addicted to chump change.

Pow.co and other boosted sites are the best places for Bitcoiners who want to optimize economic growth can talk about what really matters!

Pow.co is the HUD of the Game of Real Life

Daniel Krawisz

We have a problem with being trapped in the Matrix. As in Plato's Cave, people are manipulated by shadows that they confuse for real life. Boost connects us to the real world because it shows us real energy that was spent. Shadows cannot have boost attached to them and survive for long.

In discussions at the pow.co daily meeting, questions were raised about how to use Boost POW in video games. Our conclusion is that it should is the opposite of the Matrix: Instead of being a game disguised as real life, the best game with Boost POW is real life disguised as a game. Thus, Boost can appear inside the Matrix to lead people out.

The best inspiration from science fiction is the Daemon series from Daniel Suarez. In this series, a distributed computer network provides people with an overlay on top of ordinary reality, including a digital currency, that enables them to work together like a swarm.

The big difference is that pow.co has no Daemon, only the intelligence that people bring in with it, which is an improvement because that was the most implausible part of the book. A better metaphor for what is possible with pow.co is not a swarm, which suggests some kind of aggressive insect that eats everything in sight, but a herd, a flock, or a school of fish. Something that can act together to protect each other and avoid predators.

The Self-Actualizer and the Maslow Pyramid of Needs

Daniel Krawisz

Self-actualization is a term that refers to the tendency of an organism to pursue its own growth. It recalls Nietzsche's exhortation to "become who you are" and it is most closely associated with the psychologist Maslow, who did the most to elaborate it and popularize it.

Maslow is best known for his pyramid of needs (shown below), but there is much more to his thought than the pyramid. In particular, Maslow wanted to understand and characterize the self-actualizer so that everyone would understand how to be one. This would lead to a much happier and healthier society, he believed.

The pyramid depicts the result of Maslow's investigation into the holistic or overall person, which is an important strand in his thought. The other important strand was to characterize psychological illness versus health. In his estimation, the psychology of his day had studied mental illness a lot but had no idea about the nature of health.

To Maslow, the self-actualizer is the psychologically healthy person and all mental illness can be understood in terms of how it prevents self-actualization. Thus, a psychologically healthy person is one who pursues growth and an unhealthy person is one who prevents himself from pursuing growth. A neurosis is an inhibition of the motivation for growth.

This information is important because it can inform our understanding of who would be a good prospective user of Boost. A big reason people don't like Boost is that there is an up-front cost and uncertain benefits. Although just about everything good in real life is the same way, this is in contrast to the majority of products on the market, which are designed to addict people with some kind of short-term benefit.

All growth involves risk and uncertainty and someone who pursues growth habitually will be used to that. Someone who is used to pursuing growth will tend to find Boost intuitive to use whereas someone who is inhibited in the pursuit of growth will tend to see the cost of Boost as prohibitive and the benefit as nebulous.

Maslow describes many qualities of self-actualizers in his book, Motivation and Personality. They are more spontaneous, less anxious, more creative, and are able to love more easily. However, all of these qualities can be understood as consequences of the quality of pursuing growth for its own sake and deriving enjoyment from the act of learning new things and developing new skills. For everyone, learning involves frustration and other unpleasant feelings, such as frustration and disappointment. Self-actualizers consistently overcome these feelings whereas neurotics allow these feelings to get in their way.

According to Maslow, babies have much less anxiety about the pursuit of growth than adults do and thus he sees self-actualization as having to do with qualities that are retained from childhood that most people forget.

It is easy to understand how this happens: babies are not faulted for being incompetent, neither by other people nor by themselves. They pursue their skills without much anxiety about failure and they have a faith that they will learn if they keep trying. As people grow up, the need to be competent becomes greater. Think of our experience in schools and how we are punished if we do not do things correctly on the first try. As an adult, incompetency is shameful and people fear being seen as incompetent. However, in order to keep learning, one must continue to be comfortable with feelings of incompetency.

More work needs to be done to understand self-actualizers, find them, and connect with them.

The POWCO team migrated from a private chat server over to BitChat. This was great.

However, it didn't take long before a nonsense-talking spam poster appeared and filled up our chat window with distracting, value-less messages.

I propose BitChat offer users the option to filter messages by those that have Proof of Work attached.

This has 3 immediate benefits:

  1. Less spam
  2. More valuable posts
  3. Potential to boost and tag the most valuable messages so they can reach wider audiences outside of BitChat.

There are open source tools available in the POWCO GitHub for simple buttons that allow users to add small amounts of boost to content.

Adding Proof of Work to messages to filter content rather than blocking or banning a person from a space or venue seems to me a more equitable and fair solution as well as a practical one. I would rather everyone have the freedom to speak as he wishes, while I filter the content that deserves my attention by introducing a small POW threshold.

Example of useless chatter that inspired this issue:

This user would likely not spend $0.05 adding PoW to these messages to get our group's attention, but he is welcome to get our attention if saying something that actually matters, as indicated by adding a small amount of PoW.

Link to GitHub Issue where you can add comment.

Difficulty Numbers Look Like Shit

The worst problem with pow co and other boost websites from the perspective of a user who is simply looking at the page for the first time is the formatting of difficulty numbers.

In particular, we do not need to see 15 decimal points of these numbers. I think at most 4 significant digits should be fine. We need standard decimal notation for numbers less than 10000 or more than .01, scientific notation for numbers outside this range.

In addition, we need a standard format for numbers along with a standard look for them, so that a difficulty number will look different from other numbers at a glance. They could have their own font or color or some other type of formatting.

The ⛏️ looks very good with difficulty numbers and should always be included. It might be good if the ⛏️ was a link to a page with more information about what it means.

Proposed Strategy for Attracting New People

Daniel Krawisz

tldr: it's romance!

In order to attract new people, we must imagine the path by which someone follows from an initial impression of the boosters to becoming a permanent member.

Hashpower is important but in the absence of competition from other groups, it is more important to be consistent over time than to be high or low. The hashpower is a good reason for someone to give us more than an initial glance. The problem is to attract that initial glance and to provide a good experience for those who would give us a deeper inspection.

Right now people are not searching for hashpower, so I think we need to do more to attract the initial glance than simply creating the display. I propose we advertise our hash rate on advertising platforms. We should buy ad space and show graphs of our hashpower and say that people can join a good group.

Someone who clicks on the ad is like someone who says yes to a date. Upon entering the web page, we need to give people a good experience that provides a short simulation of what we can provide and what we expect of people who join with us. Ideally, simply using the website at pow.co should provide people with information about ways of using boost and about the kinds of information they can get with it. The user interface of pow.co needs to be evaluated from the perspective of someone who has never seen it before. The easier it is to engage with, the fewer people we lose after clicking on the ad.

The strategy for moving from date to relationship is to be beneficial without being exploitable and to be loving without being desperate. At the same time, new people need to be assessed as to their potential value to us. This will be accomplished naturally through our interactions with boosted content without having to examine individual people.

It cannot work, however, if new users do not boost content. Thus, after clicking an ad, the next important interaction with a new user is to get them to boost content. We need to be like someone who is good at getting the other person to talk so that they give us a lot of information. That is what will make the cost of boost seem like a good buy.

From there, we can attract people with specific skills with information on the pow.co website itself. The ideal place to get programmers and whatever else we need are from among the users of pow.co.

POWCO Club Conference Room Token Update

The pow.co token supply increased from 50,000 to 21,000,000 to accommodate more users of our apps at more price levels.

All new tokens were minted directly to the current 47 pow.co club members in exact proportion to their present token balance.

As a result the new balance requirement to attend POWCO club room meetings is now ++100 pow.co tokens++.

Ready to learn something cool?

See the 48-output RUN minting transaction here!!

As always the official price of pow.co tokens is zero and if you receive any in your wallet you will become immediately bankrupt. Everyone agrees.

What's happening here will change the world

Boost POW is very simple but its applications are limitless. As we have understand, Boost opposes the source of inefficiency in decision-making processes. No one can afford to be so inefficient when others are not, so what we are doing now will eventually take over everything, either by being adopted or by successful competition.

Errors are more exponentially more costly the later in the production process they are created. With Boost POW, we regain all cost that is incurred down the line by catching each other's errors early.

When King Minos sinned by failing to sacrifice a divine bull that was more attractive to his wife than he was, he ended up with a monstrous surrogate child that he could not kill, and had instead to hide it in a maze and feed it the youth of his Kingdom.

Cost is more than just money. Life, enjoyment, and time are costs as well. Everything good is being wasted and can be regained with Boost, to the extent that we make good use of it and teach others to do the same.

Here's to the early death of all bad ideas, to the solutions of all mazes, and to youths surviving to grow old, all because of the act of sacrifice.

Congratulations to everyone reading this now for helping to make this possible and for the results you will experience.
