Since I don't own mining equipment, what is the difference between the costly signal of paying matterpool as a costly signal vs paying Baemail/the recipient as a costly signal?

There's one subtle difference...

If you operate Baemail, you could game the system.

This gets more interesting under other circumstances, too...

Let's say you pay a costly signal to draw attention to your content.

If that costly signal is paying the content producer, it's a false signal. No real cost was paid (or, the cost was small compared to the size of the signal.)

If, however, the signal requires mining, whether that's paid for or done for yourself (some subtle differences there, too,) then you can't reliably pay yourself that way.

However, if your costly signal is tied to content filtering (higher cost => higher attention,) but the profit is tied to attention rather than judgment of the value, you get into a situation where "aggressive mimicry" comes in...

Someone can accept payment for emails without actually reading them. With proof-of-work, it's the recipient's incentive to set the difficulty to the point where they want to read everything they get.

As the recipient it is in my interest to get the payment that would otherwise go to a mining pool to attach that PoW.

Yes but it's not in the sender's interest to use that system as much. PoW aligns the interest of both parties.

It is in the sender's interest to do what is in the recipient's interest, if the sender wants to maximize the chance that the recipient reads the message.

Matterpool is a bitcoin miner. The same infrastructure will be mining Boost+Bitcoin seamlessly soon. Regular users will not know or care who mines them.

Regarding the costly signal.... if you pay a fee to someone - how does it provide you "went without?"

Sending message options:

  1. Message with bitcoin value attached to recipient
  2. Boost a message (showing how much energy was spent)

Both options provide different benefits/drawbacks. For ex, Option 2 does not allow receiver to just take the money.

But it seems that there are other solutions to the "went without" problem than (2) that also provide a benefit to the recipient.

I think I'm just failing to see what benefit PoW provides to people outside of Bitcoin students.

Perhaps I'm wrong, though.

That's a good question.

Non-bitcoiners are already familiar with "Boosting" or "promoting" a twitter or FB post. They can see Boost POW in a similar way.

For 1:1 messages.... Boost will serve more as a spam filter I think.

Also - I used Matterpool as an example just because they are doing this today. I think the same thought experiment applies to any miner.
