GM

The Battle of Lepanto was fought on this day and should always stand as a reminder to fight and never give ground to savages.

evin just ordered Boba to the office from slack!

I just learnt it tests my changes on macOS, Windows and Linux by default. Until now, most AI harnesses only write code that compiles on the platform it was running on...

game changers!

My personal projects (newest first)

DuckType
DuckType is an app for macOS and Windows (and soon mobile) that combines dictation and meeting transcription. It’s privacy-focused and not VC-backed, and 4x+ cheaper than alternatives like Wispr Flow, Willow and Granola, and designed to be genuinely user-friendly, not just a wrapper around a speech API. For people who want fast, accurate dictation without compromising on privacy.

I built it after developing RSI from typing too much. Less than two months later I had median nerve surgery, which made accurate fast typing harder, so the app became even more essential to me personally. I now use it daily, including to write prompts for Claude Code and to message people.

Android for drones

Ben Butterworth
Building Android for drones. Worked in drones and devtools for more than 5 years, building software and edge AI products across TypeScript, React, Python, Rust and ArduPilot. Helping the people who need it most is what drives me, alongside a probably unhealthy attention to detail and quality.

My community-focused AI project, DuckType, was born from RSI, and became even more essential after median nerve surgery. It is free, works with your preferred local or cloud models, and is private when you run it locally.

About

Ben Butterworth

Building software since 2014, driven by an obsession to solve real problems. From edge AI to developer tools - shipping things that matter.

I've been building software since 2014, always driven by an obsession to solve real problems and a curiosity to learn about new technology. I primarily work on web technologies because it's easy to reach people with just a URL. However, a lot of my projects have needed hardware integrations, so I've developed a temperament for solving fullstack problems -software, hardware, networking, and user needs. I learn best by building things, which has led me to apply technologies to real-world projects. I appreciate everyone who has helped me along the way. I'd love to catch up!

TalkDash is a timer app for events with AI 🪄🦄. Speakers see a large timer that expands to fill the window. Event hosts can send messages to speakers. You can remind speakers to repeat audience’s questions, how much time they had left, without interrupting them or blocking the audience. I was previously showing my mobile phone to the speaker using an Android app, but it was too small and speaker couldn’t see it. It also has a timer and stopwatch.

On the tech side, I had fun playing with SolidJS, Solid Router, Tailwind, ARK UI, integrating tRPC with Fastify and using Cloudflare Workers AI. I also played with Typescript’s nodenext config for module and moduleResolution, which requires relative imports end with .js. Free and open source. https://github.com/uxduck/talkdash
