What if consciousness can be turned off and on here, and that prevents anything conscious from extreme suffering (Either by removing the consciousness from the body entirely forever, leaving an unconscious "husk" behind, or simply removing it during the suffering and then re-inserting it afterwards, leaving only the memory, if that was bearable for the experiencer)

There would be no way to know if this was happening for sure. Many people could say "Yes, I experienced extreme suffering" but it could just be a memory - wherein they went elsewhere while the extreme suffering was happening, and were seamlessly put back into their bodies after it was over with no knowledge it had happened
