It may help the model to consider the "Democratic Inversion" as the hallmark of the modern era.
This means: "Democracy has inverted such that we now cast votes [AGAINST] the candidate we like least rather than [FOR] the Candidate we like most."
Conversationally you might expect to begin hearing phrases like:
