Common methods of execution for convicted witches were hanging, drowning and burning. Burning was often favored, particularly in Europe, as it was considered a more painful way to die. The American colonies preferred hanging in cases of witchcraft.

513 witches were put on trial there between 1560 and 1700, only 112 were executed. The last known execution took place in Devon in 1685. Last trials were held in Leicester in 1717. 500 people in England are believed to have been executed for witchcraft.
