Ancient Mesopotamians conceptualized the netherworld as the cosmic opposite of the heavens and as a shadowy version of life on earth. Metaphysically, it was thought to lie a great distance from the realm of the living.

Physically, however, it lay underground and is poetically described as located only a short distance from the earth’s surface.
It is described as a dark “land of no return” and the “house which none leaves who enters,” with dust on its door and bolt.

According to Homer, the Underworld was located beyond the earth-encircling river of Ocean, at the far western end of the world.
Other locations are
A cavern near the ancient town of Tenarus
Alcyonian Lake at Lerna
Volcanic Lake Avernus
Duat is the underworld or the realm of the dead. It is the home of the god Osiris, Anubis, Thoth, Horus, Hathor, and Ma’at, and many grotesque spirits controlled by them. Duat is where people’s souls go for judgment after death.
Within the Duat are many impressive geographical features. There are normal features like islands, fields, caverns, rivers, and mounds – but also unrealistic structures like lakes of fire, trees of turquoise, and walls of iron.
Greek mythology, the common belief was the no-one who entered the Underworld would ever leave it. Greek Underworld can be thought of as being made up of three different regions; Tartarus, the Asphodel Meadows and Elysium.
