The thermoelectric effect is the direct conversion of temperature differences to electric voltage and vice versa via a thermocouple.

A common use of this is in your water heater. The pilot light heats up a thermocouple and if the pilot light goes out it shuts off the gas supply to the water heater

Am pretty sure the “thermoelectric effect” is used to power an electromagnet from your pilot light such that when the light goes out the 🧲 ceases to keep the valve open thereby preventing the build up of natural gas or propane that’d otherwise leak out.
