That's not what happened. The WSB community collectively got together to "get back" at a specific hedge fund for the crime of being wealthy. The hedge fund was irresponsible (but not illegal) for shorting the whole float. WSB collectively manipulated

Their "cross-border remittance" worked by, in the back-end, trading the remitter's USD to XRP-USD on an exchange, then moving it to Bitso, a Mexican exchange they owned part of, and exchanging it on the XRP-MXN pair to MXN which the remittee would receive.
Not sure #1 is possible, XRP is "confirmed" in 3 seconds, as in the exchange credits you within ~20-30s after you've sent.

BTC is a security. Replace by Fee is actually the final nail as it destroys all utility at scale and fraudulently denies service to those who do not want to pay unreasonable fees.
