You don't get a lot of chances to use blues & purples with dog & cat portraits, lots of browns, oranges & reds - so its fun to use opposites.
If anyone uses Ko-Fi, i've set up a space there.
Can @852 do something similar?

Revisiting a painting i thought could use a bit more colour.
The background was kinda neglected as the work was more about painting a white cat with a lot of colour. Decided to just fill in the background with a night warm yellow to complete it.
Leonardo said a painting is never truely finished, Rembrandt said a painting is finished when the artist says so.
It's good to have both options!
Oil mediums are tricky, you need to know the intrinsics of how each colour dries & layering pigment in properly to avoid issues. Oil takes years to dry out fully so cracks appear if not done correctly.
Gamblin Neo Megilp is a safer introduction to mediums.
Mostly using Michael Harding oils, they are pure pigment without fillers and he really tries to use traditional pigments if he can find them. His stack lead white is made the same way it was for centuries, very toxic method so not many do it these days.
I spent a lot of money buying the wrong paints early on, cheap brands, wrong colours & couldn't figure out why i was mixing mud every time.
Did some reading & learnt how pigments interact & studied the old palettes before modern colours were introduced.
The other important part of colour mixing is understanding every colour has two colours. All colours lean either cool or warm as a 2nd colour. There's no such thing as a pure colour outside of the light spectrum. All colour leans towards another colour.
Look at a Red.
Is it Red/Orange? (warm)
Is it Red/Purple? (cool).

Pigment reflects light so we have to mix to eject the correct light out of the pigment.
Have a read about how Stack Lead White is made!

I have some Winsor&Newton in certain colours, i prefer their Van Dyke Brown, its more oily & transparent which comes in handy when black is too much.
Best intro to oil painting is to study two palettes:
Zorn Palette & Rembrandt palette. You basically use 4-5 colours that all harmonise perfectly, from there you can start to introduce blues, greens etc to get a bit more advanced with mixes.
I'm using Old Masters Flemish Maroger but its made from lead & very hard to source & expensive.
I also use Gamblin Neo Megilp which is a modern non-toxic version or Maroger.
You can do everything with either of them, thicken, thin, oil out.
Hey thanks Julie
I'm self-taught also, I wanted to go to Florence to study but $$$ 😲🤯.
So had to learn the slow way via videos & books, old masters.
I made A LOT of mistakes until i started finding the right teachers.
I'll help you if i can, just ask!
Master studies are a great way to learn the methods and techniques the masters used. You will gain a lot of knowledge by studying in detail the palette & brush strokes with a copy. Rembrandts students would do copies of his paintings to learn faster.
Here's a painting i've recently finished.
Rembrandt master study at the same size of the original 6 x 5".
Oil on panel + traditional colours of Burnt Umber, Black, Vermilion, Naples Yellow, Lead White.
Frame is recycled cedar moulding cut & joined.

The family Labradoodle. She passed away about two years ago at the age of 15. She had a great long happy life. She loved everyone she met & got great joy out of being in nature. Miss her every day.
