To cope with the existential terror of being temporary biological creatures on a rock floating in space, our mind invents grand narratives: "I am here for a reason," "God has a plan for me," or "I have a special destiny." These thoughts act as a psychological painkiller. They make us feel important and safe, shielding us from the raw, neutral reality that nature simply exists without needing an overarching justification.
​When we tell ourselves we have to "embrace our reason," we create a subtle form of self-judgment and pressure because if we haven't found our "reason," we feel like a failure or feel anxious that we are missing out on our life. ​Instead of simply experiencing the physical reality of being alive right now and noticing our anger, sadness, or joy we get stuck in our head trying to solve a puzzle: "Is this my purpose? Am I fulfilling my destiny?" In real reality there is no hidden reason, and that is liberating.
​We are alive simply because biological processes are occurring in our body right now. We don't need a grand cosmic reason to justify taking up space. When we drop the mind's demand for a "higher purpose," we are left with the immediate, sensory reality of being alive and we are free to just be who and what we are in the present moment without having to prove or fulfill anything.
