What is interesting about this to me is that over in China they moved over to simplified Chinese, while over in Turkey they also did away with the old Turkish system in favour for the new latin based one. I truly believe there is a wealth of knowledge purposefully removed from the bulk of the population knowing that it'll be forgotten much quicker by doing so.

Fascinating. I didn't know this had happened, or was happening again

不会的,简体字在中国很早就出现了。中国只是相同的字采用了更加简单的写法,主要目的是为了降低文盲率,但是无论简体和繁体都是汉字体系中的。

No, simplified Chinese characters emerged in China quite early. China merely adopted simpler writing forms for the same characters, primarily to cut down the illiteracy rate. Both simplified and traditional characters fall within the Chinese character system.

Whether or not they emerged earlier I believe doesn't really matter, what matters is the uniform approach to focus on simplified only. Other "independent" locations like Hong Kong and Taiwan however remain on the traditional system, but can also understand the simplified system.

Also, the reading direction was changed from top to bottom followed by right to left, to the now normal left to right.

True, but if you understand Chinese, you will know that this is actually not a major issue at all. It is just that existing characters with identical meanings are adopted for the same words, and there has always been a corresponding relationship between simplified and traditional Chinese characters. The core reason is that Chinese characters are pictographs.Yet the writing direction has indeed changed, and its impacts remain unclear. Since people do not frequently browse ancient relics, most seem insensitive to this shift in writing direction.
