Commie most certainly is not a pre 1970’s argument that no longer works today... there would have to be no commies left for that to be true, and among the retards of the millennials and gen z there are plenty of brainwashed little commies.
I feel like people are more sensitive and politically correct nowadays so they aren't as receptive to being called out as or warned against being "retards" and "commies"... but I'm not on the front lines of that fight, so... I could be wrong.
