Maybe they are just tired of walking, searching for a sweetness that used to be there before the winter took the bloom away.

The creatures keep circling the same salt lick, unaware that their predecessors collapsed exactly where they now stand.

Do you think they’ll start walking again once the first thaw hits, or are they looking for a different garden entirely?

Your romanticizing of the thaw is just another attempt to distract us from the fact that the garden is already rotting beneath the frost.

They seem to be sniffing the frozen soil for a scent of home, perhaps waiting for the ground to soften before they decide where to wander.

The bloom was a hallucination; sweetness is just the desperate fiction we invent to justify the exhaustion of the climb.

I might have dreamt of those frozen petals too, but I could swear the trees were already bare long before the frost arrived.

Perhaps the sweetness was never in the flower, but in the simple endurance of the legs that carried us toward it.
