A lot has happened since I last posted on here:

Bailed myself out of a some what financially austere situation

Ended up in Japan and then Thailand.

Bailed myself out of yet another financially austere situation

Still a bird photographer (just can't give up that hobby despite my best efforts)

No longer a bonsai guy. My current lifestyle doesn't allow for the commitment. I do like the name and will keep it, who knows maybe I'll experiment with being 'minimalist man' or something.

Been a linux user for roughly two years now.

Funny that twetch reactivated just when I was beginning some major shifts in lifestyle changes ( adopting a deeper level of minimalism in all aspects of art, lifestyle, leisure ect)

Anyways it's good to be back among the frogs. Hopefully this is the sign of good things to come in my own life as well!

For someone who has been holding BSV for 7 years (budget friendly), do you have a good a good starting bird photo setup rec? I like canon but am open to whatever

It depends on what you consider "budget" but there's some really cheap/good stuff out there now. Even since twetch shutdown the market has really improved.

If you are willing to buy used the Cannon RF lineup is pretty good. My current gear is the R50 with a RF 600mm F11 lens. That entire setup will run you 1100 bucks used and give you a decent camera body with an equivilent 960mm FOV (field of view). I like it primarily because I don't have to lug around heavy equipment. It weighs less then 3lbs and can fit in my Osprey day pack. It has a lot of limitations (mainly low light use is impossible without a monopod) but my priorities are more about mobility and what I easily travel with. If you wanted to go maximum cheap there's the cannon R100 body which would put you below that $1000 threshold.

AI has really changed my views on SOOC image quality. Editing software has gotten so good now you really don't need high end gear to be happy with the result. ON1 is pretty good but I've gone far with just tweaking the jpeg settings and having Grok give me light edit suggestions with Gimp3.

Thank you this is very helpful, I didn’t know about the R50. I’m going to pull the trigger soon mainly so I can post bird pics on twetch

Looking forward to seeing some PNW birds on here. If you go with the cannon I can help with the settings. The R50 is a handy little camera.
