Interesting... I think it will be death by a thousand cuts for Twitter... or death by a thousand competitors and an exposed bot and blatant censorship, probably both. Not all competitors will probably make as Twitter is right now (even though it's probably way less used than actually thought), but the fact that many are trying is great for the people that want to see Twitter gone, such as myself. If Elon Musk still has to buy it, I'd be interested to see what is done with it regarding censorship.
But if he creates his own, that could have a pretty big jump start in users and I think would put the writing on the wall for Twitter, perhaps starting a spiral down. Then there's Twetch steadily growing, there's Truth Social, Gab, Gettr, Parler, this one, Lens Protocol etc... I think the fundamentals of web3 will have a larger impact on the end of Twitter than competitors that use traditional technology - but all will have a role in it. And this is just considering microblogging competitors, then it has big competition from its usual competitors like Instagram and TikTok
