THE COST OF CONVENIENCE: OLD SCHOOL COFFEE POT VS. K-CUP
Despite the fact that the old school coffee pot does the same job for less money, is more eco-friendly and has a more efficient supply chain, people still pay more for the convenience of a K-Cup which produces a plastic waste byproduct.
This K-Cup popularity has flummoxed environmentalist Craig Barton. “Why do people prefer K-Cups to traditional coffee pots, despite the latter being more cost-efficient and eco-friendly?” Barton is asking. He seeks answers to an age-old question of why better technology does not always prevail.
"The K-Cup's popularity is driven by convenience," responded the marketing manager of Ethereum Grounds Distribution. ETH Grounds say the K-cup provides a single-serve option for those on the go and in way more varieties. They say coffee pots are "Boomer Logic" and K-Cups are the future.
However, this future comes at a cost; both financially and environmentally. The K-Cup coffee maker is more expensive than old school coffee pots for starters. And that is just the beginning of a long list of disadvantages to K-cup consumption.
Gardeners will tell you coffee grounds are an excellent fertilizer. “This extends the value of coffee by turning the grounds into dirt which can fuel the growth of vegetables. Using the original protocol coffee maker the way it was designed is a 1000x improvement in green technology over the K-cup,” claims Barton, head scientist at BSV Environmental Group.
After spending more on a K-cup machine, the end user then pays more money for individual servings. “We're talking orders of magnitude,” says Craig. “It could cost 10X to buy boxes of K-cups over big blocks of bulk coffee."
Worse yet, K-cups produce plastic waste. This ends up in landfills and oceans. By adding an unnecessary layer to the production and distribution of coffee, there are increases in industrial waste that go into the making and packaging of the cups. Plus, yet another layer of gas fees for transport.
Barton is determined to understand why people are willing to pay more for a product even when they are aware of the better efficiency and scalability of another. He believes it is a symptom of a larger issue, of people not understanding the true costs of convenience. BSV Environmental Group says they can educate people on the “scam” being perpetrated by the coffee industry and this will lead to the mass adoption of old fashioned coffee pots over the next 10 to 20 years.
"They have more flavors, yes. There are more on and off ramps with these fancy coffee exchanges popping up on every corner. But those bucket shops are frauds and it's a shame customers are willing to pay more for a product that is less efficient and more wasteful. We need to educate the public on the real definition of coffee."
Barton's research is a reminder that convenience often comes with hidden costs, but his opponents wonder about his commitment to understanding consumer preferences. On the other side of the issue, Ethereum Grounds Distributing doesn't believe waging a word war on the technical definition of "coffee" is an effective strategy.
“Education is nice but what Barton needs is popularity," ETH Grounds told us. "Winners aren't just the best tech. Winners find the right combination of technology and marketing. That's why everyone is drinking our ETH coffees and loves to spend more on it. ”
