Building the slow way is more genuine. Otherwise you end up with a bunch of sock puppets and yes men as followers who only interact with you when you're offering money. Take a look at u/5798 profile.

Whilst I agree with these suggestions, as someone that has built followings many times, I find that a mixture tends to work well, but I won't be doing these any longer as the trust is obviously damaged now.
