Depending on the variety Boxwoods can handle zone 4 winters. They also backbud readily making it easy to style them via cut and grow methods. Spruces would be a good native choice in your climate but they are difficult to train (wire) sometimes. cont..

If you wanted more of a challenge but with a flowering bonsai; you could consider a Chaenomeles. They can handle some cold and are overall low maintenance. The caveat being you would need some place for good temperature management during your winters.
