If the hospitals will not be overloaded if we open again, than I agree, open it up. That is still the only reason for the lockdown. Germany is doing that and monitoring the R0 in order to tier their easing. Seems very smart to me.

We don't want hospitals overloaded.
But we also don't want a global great depression, and famines.

Optimizing for one at the expense of the other is highly unlikely to be optimal overall.

Regarding NY, I know by a direct contact from a medical staff that it was really really hard.
The question is how cautious you have to be when opening up because the effects of tightening are felt only weeks later.

I suppose because of lockdown + fear.
We will see, Sweden will be hit hard economically even if there is no lockdown apparently.
I am eager to see some easing AND no signs of collapse of the health system, I will celebrate this a lot.
