I think most people don't want to take the responsibility for their own life. They want to stay in the comfort bubble by having someone who tells them what to do and think. It's something deeply rooted in human behavior it seems as this already goes on for a very long time. what is it? taking the easiest way / natural laziness? fear of unknown / disorientation?
