What exactly is the use of NFTs? Does it just store photos on the blockchain? I'm really curious. Could anyone explain what its essence is?

the essence is to prove ownership of some specific 'thing'. In current practice it seems to be most popular for collector / trading hobby of entirely digital items such as little artworks - jpegs and such. A digital version of baseball cards, top trumps, garbage pail kids etc. But it can (in theory) be used to 'prove' ownership of a car or a house or whatever.
