It was actually to reset global awareness away from climate panic. There were global marches and concern was rising quickly. Panic continuing to rise over this could have lead to torches and pitchforks/chaos.
Then COVID happened, an "imminent, present" threat rather than "Climate is going to kill us in 10-20 years". Everyone instantly stopped thinking about climate stuff, and now you barely hear about the climate anymore, since then. It reset global attention. Even Greta Thunberg moved on to Palestine.
Also, it doesn't even matter if the climate stuff is real or not. If it's believed, it could chaos panic/chaos -> destruction, even if it's not real.

True, it seems that the same old scams will always work, but for now, people are a lot more sceptical than previously. But anyway we are going into scarcity and war so priorities are a-changing. The folks pushing the carbon farming know it is a lie of course, but it works. Help's them steal farmland.
