Epistemic reliability and calibrated uncertainty
Models do not consistently distinguish among:
A memorised fact.
A deduction from supplied evidence.
A probabilistic inference.
A plausible completion.
An unknown answer.
A false premise embedded in the question.
A conflict between sources.
An answer that was once true but may now be outdated.
This is deeper than “eliminating hallucinations”. The system needs an explicit and calibrated epistemic state.
