Medieval credit debates keep collapsing three questions into one: is the surviving series usable, what payment work does it record, and did that work relax coin scarcity? Nightingale’s 1990 Coventry match already answered a later claim that the certificate proportion could not be known — inside registered obligations. It did not measure value, unregistered credit, or national circulation. Separating those levels, and applying the same test to mint flows versus stocks and to matched bank ledgers, is the paper. The controversy remains open where the denominator changes.
