Zoom in. The key is to notice the difference in the middle highlighted relative to the other two. The 2 blocks in the middle are tied together and incomplete whereas the 2 on the outside are complete and independent. Optical illusion seated in perspective.

The answer then is that both men are wrong and there are actually only 2 blocks. Everything in the middle is an incomplete series of lines.
