Is that really out of the question for a document thats been translated and rewritten how many times over thousands of years?

It's actually way worse than that. From the oldest 5000 copies of the new testament NOT ONE OF THEM IS IDENTICAL. There isn't a good documentation of all the differences. Its est to be around 500,000. Most are small errors but alot are modified on purpose.
