Owning your data allows competing sites to be built around the data. You should be easily able to access your data even if one site bans you from their website. Eventually you will be able to move between social front ends and take your data with you. Possible for cross site friends and messaging too.
Regardless, the big advantage over twitter, is that you pay to use twetch, so you data is not sold to fund the site. NO adds here!
