Didn't the Oracle of Delphi reside in a cavern sitting on a tripod over a fissure?
The Oracle would inhale noxious fumes and have a vision, I believe.

According to what i red the chamber was beneath the temple (called adyton) Yes, Pythia was sitting there on a tripod inhaling this fumes. From where this vapours came is not clear.. maybe from an underground cavern.
