Would pre hashing the content before you put it on chain help reduce the amount of space it takes and therefore cost to upload? I know a hash can hold a lot of info but not if it could condense it to make it cheaper.

No, a cryptographic hash is a secure reference. You cannot reconstruct information about the source message from the hash digest.
