I think it's unfortunate that the protocol is not set in stone and that Craig can make any changes he wants, apparently.

Satoshi made clear that lost coins means all other coins become more valuable.

And when it comes to theft, every society has ways to deal with theft. There was no need to change anything and allow confiscation. Except for Craig's personal needs, obviously.
