No, proof of work is the underlying value. The money is bitcoin.
bitcoin isn't worth anything without PoW. bitcoin is just a time-stamp server, ie. the new punch clock system.
PoW kickstarts bitcoin with capitalism. Bitcoin without economic incentives would be really boring.
Work is not money.
