Many people are reluctant to read code written by others, and even less willing to refactor someone else’s “shit-mountain” code. AI, however, is quite willing to read it—and often refactors it surprisingly well. This suggests that so-called “shit-mountain” code is not inherently impossible to refactor; rather, people are unwilling to invest a great deal of effort in unpaid work, and so use the excuse of it being a “shit mountain” to decline. During refactoring, AI occasionally remarks, “This is way too complicated,” or “It’s not that simple.” But as it digs deeper, it finally says, “Actually, it’s very clear.” The original author of the “shit mountain” cannot help but smile, feeling as though he has met a kindred spirit—one who truly understands the music in his code. To find such a soulmate: he has no regrets.
