The herd is our default setting.
It is in all of us to the degree that we allow it.
To overcome the herd in ourselves a process of individuation has to be initiated.
This process involves facing ourselves, facing fears and evaluating our irrationality.
To clarify:
I don't use the term herd as an insult.
There is nothing wrong with being a happy member of a herd and loving the shephard.

We do have the bias towards self preservation and many accept their "flight" reflex as normal. Is this the reference you were intending?
Blind obedience as in the word referred to by @16322 is something many accept, as taught by society and government.
