Not all of the airline companies would have failed. Where do the planes go? Pilots? Equipment? They get either absorbed by the surviving airlines, or bought out by investors for cheap. New and better run companies will form.

Ideally the market chooses which companies are worthwhile. That is the most efficient way.

Of course they are dragged down, as that’s the ebb and flow of a market. Majority of strong worthwhile companies will endure.

Bailouts keep inefficient and/or incompetent companies from going bankrupt. Delays and exacerbates the problem. It prevents the resources within company from being recycled into economy for higher/better use.
