The deep-voiced creature, who I learned was called a “man” and that he referred to himself as “Jerry,” spent the next three hours teaching me how to “dress myself.” Things like what clothes went on what body part, how they were supposed to “fit…”

“…uh, sir?” One of the deep-voiced beings near me was addressing me.

“Yes?”

“You put the shirt on the top part of your body and your arms through the little holes.”

“Isn’t that what I did?”

“Uh, no… you’ve got your head through an arm.”

“Oh?”

“And somehow you’ve stuffed your leg through the head hole.”

“Uh…”

“Also, I’ve never seen a pair of slacks used as a do-rag before…”

“…alright. It’s clear you’ve never done this before, so let me help you. I can’t believe this…”

Eight days ago, I wandered into this desert community of people. There was a lot of screaming and a lot of random soft flat things thrown at me. I soon realized that I was something called “naked,” and that the locals were trying to help.

Ten days ago, I was a simple cactus. Nine days ago, I became a human. Does this not bother anyone?? How does a cactus turn into a human? I’ve been trying to sort this out since, but I’m not sure how to go about this. Moreover, how can I read and write?

I was saved early on as a toddler. Since then, the Lord has guided me along the way and helped me to avoid sinful issues… or, if my arrogance has gotten too far from Him, let me slip. Through these experiences, His guidance has always remained true.

To settle for anything less isn’t showing our willingness to accept redemption. It’s showing our childish demand for the status quo to remain the same, regardless of whether it’s healthy or not.

By removal I mean removing old monuments to people formerly celebrated as heroes, monuments that are absolutely and decisively anti-Christian to begin with.

This isn’t “removal of history.”

This is our spiritual atonement for past neglects.

Reckoning with the truth of slavery not only requires a celebration of our stance against it, but the sobering analysis and, yes, even the incisious removal, of where in our past we have failed to observe that belief.
