nick berg, the guy famously beheaded in an al-qaeda video in 2004, apparently was just hanging around in iraq as a radio tower repairman (?) before being apprehended by US officials who held him for a couple weeks and then advised him to leave, which they'd help him do.
and apparently he refused, continuing to hang around, getting interviewed by michael moore for fahrenheit 9/11 and eventually apparently being kidnapped and murdered by zarqawi.
and apparently he was investigated after 9/11 because a conspirator had 'used his email address', which is explained as a chance encounter on a bus in oklahoma where the conspirator borrowed his laptop.
