Sometimes it's easier to scam the smart and ambitious.
It's ESPECIALLY a bad deal for those above average in intelligence and ambition. It signals that they are likely the average of all other degree holders. This undersells them. It oversells dumb lazy people (though still not enough to justify the cost).
I'm being partially cheeky.
But every single thing you get at college can be had better/cheaper without it.
Even living on campus and classes and sports and parties. Just do it without registering or paying tuition.
